News Eyes & Ears

New Eyes and Ears Isaiah 9:2-7 John 1: 1-18 I love good art work, don't you? Of course, what constitutes good art varies from person to person... beauty is definitely in the "eye of the beholder." Now I’m certainly no artist! No doubt about that... and I don’t claim to be! But, I do, occasionally, dabble in painting... when I have a little extra time. I’ve even taken several painting classes with Tawana Henson, at her art studio in Lanett. Some of you know Tawana... she’s the art instructor at W. O. Lance Elementary school... I’ve found that an occasional art class can be fun... despite the fact that I have no idea what I’m doing... it’s an easy way to express some creativity, and reli

The Choice is Ours

The Choice is Ours Luke 1:26-38 Luke 2:1-20 Several years ago, Fredrick Buechner (BEEK-ner) wrote a book called Peculiar Treasures... and in the book, he “fleshes out” some of the more interesting characters of the Bible. And... of Mary... the mother of Jesus, Buechner wrote: “[Mary] struck the angel Gabriel as hardly old enough to have a child at all, let alone this child, but he’d been entrusted with a message to give her... and he gave it. He told her what the child was to be named, and who he was to be, and something about the mystery that was to come upon her. ‘You mustn’t be afraid, Mary,’ he said. And as he said it, he only hoped she wouldn’t notice that beneath the great, golden wi

Ordinary Hope

Week Three, Advent Series 2017 Ordinary Hope Matthew 11:2-11 I was riding along not so long ago... in my car... minding my own business... when I noticed a sticker on the bumper of the car in front of me that read: “Don’t Follow Me... I’m lost, too!” I like that! It’s how I feel most of the time. Well, I was reading this past week about a different bumper sticker that was quite popular several years ago... it simply read, “I Found It.” I don’t know who designed it... who came up with the concept... or where it’s gone, but “I Found It” was on a lot of bumpers. I do know that it was intended to be a statement of faith, a declaration of identity, a witness for the gospel. I couldn’t h

Kind Words?

Welcoming Christ: An Advent Series -Week 2 “Kind Words?” Isaiah 40:1-5 Matthew 3:1-11 The story’s told of man... a truck driver... who, being tired from a long day of driving, pulled into a lonely truck stop and slid-up to the counter. In a minute or two a waitress came out from the kitchen and asked, “What’ll it be?” The truck driver said, “All I want is a kind word and a piece of apple pie.” The waitress disappeared into the kitchen and returned with a slice of pie. She set the dish on the counter and started back into the kitchen. The truck driver said, “And the kind word?” The waitress turned around, leaned over the counter, and said, “If I were you, I wouldn’t eat the pie.” A kind w

Tend to the Now!

Welcoming Christ: An Advent Series Sermon One: “Tend to the Now” Matthew 25:31-40 Mark 13:24-37 The Advent Season is upon us! Hard to believe, isn’t it? Counting today, we only have 22 shopping days left until Christmas... it’s coming! Of course, “advent” means “coming” - and during this season we remember the coming of Christ 2000 years ago, and we reflect on Jesus’ promise to come again. It always fascinates me to hear of all the different groups announcing the date of the end of the world! Of course, we all know that’s nothing new... Christians have been fascinated with the “end” since the beginning of the faith. The scripture itself is proof! And books like the “Left Behind” series..
